I was in RVAH-9 in Sanford NAS from 1964 to 1966. We made a med cruise and a west pack cruise during that time. The med cruise was on the Saratoga and the west pack cruise was on the Ranger. I would like to get in touch with any sailors who served during that time or anywhere close to that time. I would really like to go to a reunion. My name is John Peria, i now live in Lake Clear, NY, but spend time in Florida in the Spring. My e mail address is maryperia85@gmail.com. I can provide my other contact information if you need it. Thanks for this site.
We did also, even down town was so much different.....Even Lake Mary is now a metropolitan area.....There is just too much traffic. We live down in Seffner and our traffic is getting so bad...
I was surprised that I re-uped too. It wasnt until I was 42. Oldest son enlisted in the MC on his 18th birthday and his mother had just divorced me so free and clear I thought I would revert and hang out with my boy for a while, which I did for a couple of years. Caught hops and stayed in his barracks, ate in chow hall, etc. Was going to get out and my youngest who was 15 said that I couldnt because I did it for Jeff now I had to do it for Daniel. So, I kept on until I had to get out at 60 years old.
9 kids? Wow. I did 4 and even then I couldn't keep their names straight.
The reunion spanned 27 years of VAH-9/RVAH-9 aviation. Some 300 Hoot Owls were located, but not all attended the reunion. Many of the guys I was in with didn't even know about it either. I think the committee did a tremendous job of locating so many owls. If you would like, I'll give you my cell number and we can talk and swap e-mail address then, if you wish.
If I can help you find anyone, let me know. Marvin Miller & I maintain a fairly large roster of Hoot Owls, many from out era 1956-1960, but also later Hoot Owls. I also have a roster from the all VAH-9/RVAH-9 reunion which was held in 1999. Did you make that one?
"We took a trip back to the Sanford area last year. Drove thru the old base. I didn't recognize anything left other a two story brick structure we called the Petty Officers barracks."
"Hey Bob... I was with Heavy 9 and left for DC after our deployment to Vietnam. I believe that was 1967. The command was NRTSC. Mustered out in 1969 and returned to Seminole County, Fl. Started teaching at CHAFI and Jones college in Orlando. "
"Thanks for the offer John. No, I did not attend the reunion. In fact I was not aware of it. I was a member of Heavy 9, IOIC crew, from late 62 to late 66."
"hey Don, Bill Dell here. I remember the liberties with Petit, Skocich, Vaughn. Was surprised to see that you re-up'ed. Live in So. Ms. here. Had 9 Kids, and retired in 2003. Hope all is well on your end."

I noticed the name of the town Bill currently resides in and thought it was appropriate for an ex-Airedale. :o)
