We took a trip back to the Sanford area last year. Drove thru the old base. I didn't recognize anything left other a two story brick structure we called the Petty Officers barracks.
Hey Bob... I was with Heavy 9 and left for DC after our deployment to Vietnam. I believe that was 1967. The command was NRTSC. Mustered out in 1969 and returned to Seminole County, Fl. Started teaching at CHAFI and Jones college in Orlando.
Yes, Sanford and the base has changed a lot since we were there. I was never stationed in Albany, having left the Navy in 1960. The Vigilante's were just starting to show up in Sanford. As snow-birds, my wife & I used to visit Sanford regularly. We always enjoyed the trips back I time. I now live in Hernando, and still go over to Sanford with some of my Hoot Owl friends. Stay well.
"We did also, even down town was so much different.....Even Lake Mary is now a metropolitan area.....There is just too much traffic. We live down in Seffner and our traffic is getting so bad..."
"I live in Tampa now and occasionally we will drive up to Sanford and I cannot believe how much it has changed. You would not believe that the base was ever a base. The barracks a cement block building is still there but every thing else has been…"
