Sorry I am so late in getting this to you---hello to all--- Doug

  • Hi there Skipper!  I'm surprised that you even remember me or even where I live!  The one time I was privileged to ride back seat in the Vigi was with you and borrowing Geopfarth's flight suit.  That was a great time to remember.  I did my 4 years then got out and moved back home to Oregon and have been here ever since.  I do computer work now for a state agency.  I've kept in touch with a few of my shipmates over the years.  The internet really helps with that!  If you ever make it to Salem and are interested in a cup of coffee let me know.

I would be interested in finding Bill Key.  I got along pretty well with him and Bill Chastain.  Chastain was up in Washington last I knew, but that's been some years back.  If you see him again please say Hi to him for me.

  • Appreciate your note - GREAT to hear from you.  I added a few photos on my page, one in particular you will appreciate.  We spend winters in San Clemente, CA and rest of the time in Flagstaff, AZ (May-Nov).  Not sure what your travel plans are, but welcome seeing you again and have plenty of room in San Clemente should you need a place to stay.  I took up golf a few years ago and now in the 12-14 handicap range; perhaps you could show me how it's supposed to be done.  After grad school and a few months in F-14 rag, I decided to put the masters degree to use and switched from line to EDO and got a position with PMS-405 (Navy High Energy Laser Program Office) in Albuquerque working the Airborne Laser Lab with the Air Force, then eventually moving to WSMR to run the Navy MIRACL laser system.  While in New Mexico working the lasers, I got my private / instrument rating and my brother (airline pilot) and I purchased a V-35B Bonanza.  That was a fun airplane to fly and the discipline I learned in the Navy made the 23 years of  flying that machine very rewarding (as you know, you don't mess with that airplane unless you want to get hurt). Ended up with more time in the bonanza than the Vigi when all the dust settled.  Hopefully, we can catch up in the near future and fill in the blanks.  An honor and a pleasure to have flown with you; I learned a lot from you.  Though, I still haven't acquired a taste for cafe sambuca.

  • Skipper; glad you're doing well.  Trust your left thumb is still working; recall that you and I launched on 98th flight when the throttles retarded a little and got a little too aggressive moving them forward.  You were gracious enough to let me continue on and become the 1st Nimitz Vigi centurion.  Our plan was to do it together!!!  Geop

  • Good to have you surface, Mike. I have thought about where you might be. Come to Georgia and hit the golf ball here at Reynolds Plantation. Hello to Dianne.

"Sam: Great to see you posted on the website! You and I have fond memories of 149299. I flew more that half of my Vigi hours in that bird. It was always up and had full systems. Must have been due to your plane captain skills. Mike Madden"
