  • Geop: We moved downwards here July 2016. Diane has been recovering from breast cancer and chemotherapy effects for two years , but is finally feeling better. We love the area. Would love to join you for some golf sometime. I play Wednesday’s with the old folks. All the best to you and Alana. Cell: 520-406-9368 turfcommander@gmail.com

  • Don't know if you'll get notified about this message.

Anyway, I've remarried after my wife passed away and we've moved to St George, Utah.  Are you still in Flagstaff?  If we ever get through there perhaps could meet for a cup of coffee?

  • Good to see you in the Hooter Community. I remember you well from my days in Heavy Nine in the Avionics Shop. I remember your Centurion flight as well. My boys and I talk a lot about the Indy and Nimitz and of all the officers, it was you and Skipper Madden I remember most. Hope all is well with you and yours. I am enjoying a peaceful life on 2 beautidul acreas on the Gulfcoast. You ever head south, give me a call. Hooters always welcome !
  • Geo P: What a pleasant surprise to hear from you! Of course I remember the thumb incident. At the time I was probably more concerned of the consequences to my golf game! Fortunately, it has had no effect. Diane and I might get down in your direction before long and would love to see you. You were always one of my favorite RANs and people. I am running a small business in the Northwest providing golf courses with various products. I'll have to look Dean Kelly up as I frequently go through Salem. I ran into Bill Key in the barber shop at the Navy Exchange in Bremerton several years ago. At the time he was Intell Officer on the Enterprise. Lets keep in touch.

  • Just noticed you live in Flagstaff!  I was within a few miles of your place this June when I took my telescope down to the Grand Canyon for the annual star party!  If I'd known it would have been cool to meet for a cup of coffee or such!  Oh well.

  • Forgot that you were a mustang and, since I only did my 4 years and that was long ago, I couldn't remember what that meant until I looked it up on Google!  And yes, I guess I'm not aware of what you might have kept from happening to some of us!  But I sure thank you for that.

Funny, but the biggest trouble I ever got into in the Navy was the time I got put on report for shooting rocks into the salt pond behind the barracks with my wrist rocket sling shot.  The SP took it away from me and put me on report and charged me with possession of a dangerous weapon.  That monday I got called in my Mr. Davis, the legal officer.  He was pretty shocked since it was the other Kelly (Dennis) that usually got in trouble.  When I told him it was for possession of a dangerous weapon he got this look on his face like maybe I had a bazooka or something.  Then I told him, in a sad repentent voice, "They took away my slingshot."  He got that straightened out, I got my slingshot back (they wanted me to store it in the armory!) and warned me that if any windows got knocked out they'd come looking for me.

BTW, did you keep up with my Ensigns, William Key and William Chastain?

Good to hear from you.  Take care.

    Dean

  • Hello Mr. Geopfarth!  This is Dean Kelly.  I was a PT/IS in H-9 from 73 - 79.  I've wondered what has happened to fellow shipmates and it's really cool to find people here.  After I got out of the Navy I moved back to Oregon, got married, went a couple different directions career wise, then finally got a degree in Computer Science from the local CC in 1984.  I've been working for the state ever since and am now a Network Administrator.  I also do hobbies of fishing, boomerangs, and astronomy.  I even have a cool 2nd job of running friday night shows at the college planetarium.

A few years ago I discovered a Vigilante plastic model that included decals for H-9 modeled on our Nimitz cruise.  Klopfenstien and Palmatier's names were on the side.  Can't remember the other side.  I was able to hook up with K+11 here and made a deal to send it to him if he would send back pictures of the completed model.  No pictures yet but I do have hope.  You know that he became a priest?  Palmatier was killed in a training flight accident just weeks before he was to retire.

Hope to hear from you.  You were a cool officer and I enjoyed knowing you.

"Skipper, Geop here.   Profile indicates you're in Green Valley.  Hope this is true because I live in Flagstaff ... on the #1 green at Continental. If true, we have to play some golf somewhere."

"Dean,  good to hear from you; thanks for your kind words.  Hope being a mustang helped the way we interacted; I always respected the 'troops' and did my best to guard you from some of the nonsense you probably never knew about.  You all were the…"

"Skipper; glad you're doing well.  Trust your left thumb is still working; recall that you and I launched on 98th flight when the throttles retarded a little and got a little too aggressive moving them forward.  You were gracious enough to let me…"

"Yo, Smuts.  I don't recall you mentioning you went to NPS.  I graduated from there in 1979 (MSAE), went to F-14 rag for awhile, then changed to engineering duty and worked high energy lasers for the rest of my Navy career.  Went to TRW when I got…"
