I was going over some old issues and came across this photo of 601 parked on the flight line at NAS Alameda. I don't know who took the photo but it was during carrier quals in prior to a Westpac in 72-73 going to Vietnam. I don't remember who flew the bird to the beach because the ship, (Enterprise), was still out on a dependents day cruise and it participated in a fly by then had to go to the beach because it couldn't land on the carrier. I know this because I was in charge of the shore detachment for power plants that day. The plane was late getting back to the beach and I got in trouble for not having a crew there to meet the plane with a ladder to get the crew out. Not really the detachments fault but we took the blame anyway. I remember that once the full explanation was given to the skipper we got off. Apparently the pilot said we were all in the base club chugging brews. He apparently did not see us sitting outside the line shack waiting to be notified that 601 had landed. You're right it was CDR, Chumley's plane but he was not flying it that day. If you look just aft the tail you can see the Alameda bridge in the background.
Sorry for the super late reply, sometimes I amaze myself with procrastination.
"John,
This from my father when I shared your message:
I had the same thing happen at VT-6. One of our planes came in on a weekend. I was on duty in the ready room, turned around looked out the window to see him just sitting there with no plane…"
"Thank you so much, John. I really appreciate that. My father has this photo framed on the mantle. I'll pass this along to him so he'll know the rest of the story.
I hope this finds you well. Happy holidays to you.

Thanks Andy. It was a great feeling to sit there. A Vigilante is coming out next, maybe by next year.
Hello Andy,
Welcome aboard,
