Thanks for asking Peter, unfortunately I must say that I don't know how things are there since I fled to FL for the Winter. We're just heading back this week and currently passing through Savannah GA. on the way. My boys tell me it's still cold up there however!
I can hardly wait to get home so I can pull out my cruise books and look up some of my shipmates. I was assigned to RVAH 13 in Sanford just about a month before deploying to the Pacific on America. Then returning to more schooling in Albany, and off we went to the Med. on Forrestal. Too many great memories to ever be able to relate them all to the grandkids. I particularly remember the double deck pinochle games in the PECM shop and selling cans of soda out of there.
I've got some photo's I can post at that time too...
I have been traveling for the past few weeks and wanted to update you on Palmdale, CA.
Palmdale slowed down a lot on the defense contractor side in the early 2000s when the B-2 bomber production run was cut short. The B-1 bomber had been finished here in the 90s and the space shuttle repair was moved to Florida around the same time.
The completed the 14 freeway in the late 70s and early 80s. We have been a commuter town down to LA for a long time. The defense contractors maintained R&D facilities here, but sent the plane assembling to other states because of the cost and related poor workforce. They are gearing up to assemble the new B-21 bomber here over the next few years.
There is over a half million of us here in the Antelope Valley. My home here is my second home that I use when the wife is displeased with me. She has a nice home in Pacific Palisades with a nice view of the ocean.
"Hi John , A Big Happy Birthday to you & many more ! Give a shout sometime as I' m in your neighborhood in Lecanto . Pete DeRose at 352 - 249 1098 And talk about the good old days !!!!!!!"
