I just spotted the picture of (I assume) you next to TA3B #321. Back in 1967-1969, I was in RVAH-3 as an AQB-3 and AQB-2 working on that plane's ASB-1 system. I had not seen this particular picture before. I spent many an hour inside that radome changing out the R/T and antenna. Not to mention trips up and down the boarding hatch with that bucket of gears, servos, and synchros called a bombing computer. What a museum piece!
Les,
After leaving active service I remained in the Navy Reserve flying as a nav in the high-speed, high performance C-54 for four years. We then upgraded to a newer, even more high-speed, high performance a/c, the C-118. I remained in the reserve until 1992. The Navy--active and reserve--was always a high point in my life. All humor aside about the C-54 & C-118, I got to see a lot of the world and worked with some really fine people.
Hello Les,
Great to have you as a friend. During what years were you attached to RVAH-6 and RVAH-3? I was assigned to VAH-6 from the RAG in March, 64. Made a Med Cruise in the A-3B, then transitioned to the Vigi with RVAH-6 in 1965. Made a WestPac Cruise in '66.
"With FB there is private messaging. lt427@comcast.net is a good email...not so sure how to navigate this forum, but I do have a bunch on pics you might like. Feel free"
"Hey Salt...Les Taylor here. I did 72/73 WestPac on America with heavy Six...is that your time frame? Though I live in Baltimore, I moved here after 8 years in Savannah. I still have interests there and visit from time to time....what part of town…"
"Say what you will about "high performance"...there's something reassuring about the throb of those big round engines. I just had brunch last weekend with a friend and his dad who did 36 missions ( also as a navigator ) in B-24s. He was shipped over…"
"Hi Shevs...I guess you were the pathfinder as I came along later via RVAH-3 at NAS Albany then Heavy Six for the 72/73 WestPac on America. I hit you up because I was in Plymouth, MI last Father's Day and enjoyed the EAA event at Mettetal Airport.…"
