Welcome aboard Mrs. Wilster. I had the privilege of serving under the Captain when he was XO of RVAH-9 on the 1970 Med Cruise and then in 1971 when he was CO of the squadron when we deployed to Rota, Spain to set up the MMF there for the wing. I learned one great lesson from him that you can be a good guy and leader and get a lot of great results. I carried that life lesson throughout my 35 year business career as a CPA and financial manager.
One little funny story about the Captain when he was still the XO under Cdr. Meyer in Albany before we deployed to Spain in 1971. We had a readiness drill and Cdr. Meyer assigned the Captain to be at the enlisted barracks for the Vice Admiral's inspection. The Captain told me this was a tough old buzzard to deal with and expect the worse. The Captain did a very skillful job of answering the questions the Vice Admiral was throwing out at me about a variety of things. I had to open my locker for inspection and had pictures of my Kansas College girl friend a lovely brunette and a local stunning blonde who was attending Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Admiral was curious how I kept them straight since they both were named Jeanie. The Captain gave me that look not to give to dumb an answer to the Vice Admiral's dumb question. The Vice Admiral wanted to know if I had any tatoos yet. I had a short sleeve dress uniform short on and showed my arms to the Vice Admiral. The Captain gave me another one of the looks when we both expected the Vice Admiral to have me strip down to prove that I had not tatoos. The Vice Admiral gave us quite the lecture about that matter. The Vice Admiral left and the inspection was done. The Captain came back after walking the Vice Admiral out and gave me a big thumbs up with a nice smile.
I was fortunate to have served under two great men in Cdr. Meyer and the Captain then. They always have been on my personal list of the finest men that I have ever met in my life.
