Norfolk - Age 53, Commander of Naval Air Forces in the Atlantic. The funeral will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, October 17, 1983 in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, by the Rev CHARLES M. RIDDLE III. The Montgomery, Alabama native, died Friday, October 14, 1983, apparently of cardiac arrest, while jogging in front of Connecticut House, his home on Admiral's Row at Norfolk Naval Station. He had assumed command of Naval Air
Force, US Atlantic Fleet on August 1, 1983. He was a 1952 graduate of the Naval Academy. He won his aviator's wings in 1956. He was a member of Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, SARA JANE CLYDE SMITH; his mother, EDITH STOLLENWERCK SMITH of Greensboro, North Carolina; a daughter, LAURA SMITH of Norfolk; 3 sons, PAUL R. SMITH of Santa Barbara, Calif, CAROL C. SMITH III of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and A. MIDDLETON SMITH of Alexandria; 2 sisters, Mrs. WILLIS WEATHERFORD of Berea, Kentucky and Mrs. RICHARD RAMSEY of Chattanooga, Tennessee and a brother, CHARLES S. SMITH of Greensboro, North Carolina. Burial with military honors will be in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, with H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach is in charge. The family will be at his home. Memorial donations to the Naval Academy may be made to the Vice Admiral C.C. SMITH JR Memorial Fund, care of Commander, Naval Air Force, US Atlantic Fleet, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va 23511.
