Per Ronnie Smarr: AMH3 Shaw was assigned to line crew of RVAH-14. He was injured when 601 jumped chocks broke tie down chains and ran over him when he tried to jump from the cockpit before 601 went over the side of the ship.

Roy Eugene Shaw, 68, of Iaeger, WV, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 in Welch Community Hospital, Welch, WV. Eugene was born March 15, 1949, in Iaeger, WV, a son of the late William Jr. Shaw and the late Garnet Lambert Shaw. He was a disable United States Navy Veteran and the co-owner of Shirl’s Flowers and Gifts in Iaeger. Eugene was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iaeger; a member of the Iaeger Lion’s Club and a member of the Odd Fellows. He was a former chief of the Iaeger Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Iaeger Town Council. In addition to his parents, William and Garnet Shaw, Eugene was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Troy Coleman. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sandy Shaw of the home; one daughter, Erica Francis and husband Roy of Chesapeake Beach, MD; two grandchildren, Elijah and Kensleigh Francis both of Chesapeake Beach, MD; his twin sister, Norma Jean Tindle of Blountville, TN; a special nephew, Jack Tindle; special sisters and brothers, Cathy Thomas, Teresa Hutchinson, and Ivan Coleman all of West Virginia, Randall Coleman, Anette Coleman, Mary Blair, Billy Coleman, Cindy Blair, Pam Burchett, Steven Coleman, David Coleman and Karri Blankenship all of North Carolina; a special mother-in-law, Lucille Coleman of Iaeger, WV; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 25, 2017, at 1 o’clock with Reverend Don Morgan and Reverend Ernest Francis officiating at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger. Burial will follow in the McCoy Cemetery on Coon Branch Mountain near Iaeger, WV, where miltary graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW, post #1144. Serving as pallbearers will be Roy Francis, William Duty, Jack Tindle, Patrick Hutchinson, Billy Coleman, Leroy Blankenship, Jimmy Blair, David Coleman, and Scott Burchette. Honorary pallbearers will be Wilbert Marcum, Terry R. Burchette, Buck Estep, Ronnie McCoy, Dink Vanover, Danny Thomas, Randall Coleman, Don Estep and Pete Keaton. Friends may visit with the family Saturday, November 25, 2017, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, WV.
