Captain Kenneth E. Enney, U.S. Navy (Retired), passed away August 20, 2006, at his home on St. Simons Island, Ga.
Born, August 11, 1926, Ken Enney was a passionate aviator who learned to fly at the age of 12 in Dayton, Ohio. With the outbreak of World War II, he yearned to fly in combat. In 1944, at age 17, he was old enough to enlist, and left his boyhood home of Youngstown, Ohio and joined the Army Air Corps. At the end of the war he was discharged from the Army Air Corps and for a short period attended university at Ohio State and the University of South Carolina before entering the U.S.Navy in 1946. In February 1949, he was designated a Naval Aviator. During his Naval career, he had over 1000 carrier landings, served as a Test Pilot, Air Officer aboard the USS Constellation and flew over 200 combat missions in Southeast Asia. The aircraft he flew in combat included the A-5C/RA-5C Vigilante, the F-4 Phantom, the A-7 Corsair II and the A-6 Intruder. His commands included Heavy Attack Squadron Seven, Attack Carrier Air Wing Fourteen, Reconnaissance Attack Wing One and Training Air Wing Eight. His personal awards included the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars with combat "V" device for gallantry under fire and 22 air medals. He retired from the Navy in 1974 after 31 years of active military service and settled with his family on St. Simons Island where he ran a small air charter service for several years and was an active member of the Georgia Civil Air Patrol. He is survived by his wife, Alice Elizabeth of St. Simons Island, daughter Elizabeth of Carrollton, Ga, son, Kenneth Jr. of San Diego, Ca. brother, James of Orange Park, Fl, and brother Daniel of Indianapolis, In. A Requiem Mass was held Friday, August 25, 2006 at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Marys, Ga Historic District. Burial will be held at a later date with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the "Memorial Fund" at St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, 5041 Lakeshore Drive W., Orange Park, Fl. 32073. Chapman Funeral Chapel of Brunswick, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.
