Obituary

Captain Douglas Connor Coleman, USN (Ret), husband, father, and beloved grandfather died peacefully in his home on February 26, 2022 in Pensacola, Florida. He was blessed to have his wife Dianne by his side to the end.

Doug was born in Wichita, Kansas on August 3, 1934. After attending college, he began a 26-year career in the United States Navy, retiring on Sep 30, 1981. During those 26 years, Doug and his family lived in 5 different states and had an overseas tour in Rota Spain. Doug’s naval career included tours in 4 different types of operational aircraft (AD SkyRaider, F-9 Cougar, A3 SkyWarrior, and RA5C Vigilante), 670 carrier landings, 4 combat cruises with 321 combat flights , 15 Air-Strike Medals and was highlighted with a Squadron Commanding Officer tour in combat. Upon retirement, he began his second career in Naval Aviation as a private contractor flying the T-47 and T-39 aircraft in training prospective Naval Flight Officers. He retired a 2nd time in March 2004, with a total flight time (Navy and contract flying) of 14,525 flight hours. He remained in Pensacola until his death.

Doug enjoyed golf, “Happy Hour”, traveling the country in his RV, and was an avid Texas A&M Aggies fan to the end. He was a devoted “Grumpy” to his grandsons and great grandsons and he loved nothing more than hearing about and often attending the boys many athletic events throughout the Southeastern and Eastern United States.

Doug is survived by his wife Dianne; daughters, Karen (Mike Mason) and Leslie; grandsons, Cole, Drew, Will Mason and Taylor Wilde; great grandsons, Foster and Bo Mason; stepdaughters, Jamie Johnson, Tami (John White) and Stacy Powell.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Melvin Coleman; brother, Carl Coleman; and wife, Patricia Knox Coleman.

The family would like to thank all who came to visit, called and were there for Doug and Dianne. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 4 at Perdido Bay United Methodist Church in Pensacola, FL.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to The Redemption Store, a Ministry of Perdido Bay United Methodist Church at 13660 Innerarity Point Rd. Pensacola, FL 32507.
