The USS Midway Museum in San Diego will feature former crewmembers describing their experiences in flying the aircraft on board the museum.   Among the aircraft on Midway is RA-5C BUNO 156641 in RVAH-12 markings.  Although no A-5 squadrons were ever assigned to the Air Wing on Midway, A-5A aircraft did make landings as part of an evaluation.  With the mission of the A-5 changed to reconnaissance it was determined that installation of an Integrated Operational Intelligence Center (IOIC) was not feasible on Midway. Consequently, no further A-5 operations were conducted.  As the only Midway volunteer docent who actually flew in the A-5 (I was an A-3 B/N who flew the A-5 while assigned to HATW-1 staff) I was asked to coordinate the event for the Vigilante.  Fortunately, some former A-5 crewmembers have agreed to participate in the event.  Gunder Creager, Duffy Hutton and Frank Hamrick have definitely committed and a couple of others are likely to join in.  Accordingly, we would welcome any other pilots or RANs to join us on the flight deck and particularly we would love to have any others from the RVAH community who may live near or be visiting the San Diego area on those days stop by to chat.

  • I am planning to be there. I made the 08/09 Westpac cruises on the Kitty Hawk - and was the squadron CO on the second.

You might be interested in the section of my website about RA-5Cs - it is at http://www.bobjellison.com/RA5C_Vigilante.htm

Dunno if I can make it, but will try.  I am a RAN who flew in 156641 back in the day.  :-)

  • Regret unable.  As a former RA-5C Plane Captain and member of VA-93 (A-7 series)/CVW-5, I would have loved to attend.  Best wishes.
